“Bhartiya Mahila” a bank only for women will open on November 19th of this year. The bank is being established to ensure women’s rights and to create safety zones for women. Furthermore, most bank clerks are female and 25 branches have been opened nationwide. However, some say the women’s only bank will promote segregation and damage gender equality. Some experts insist these types of gender specific institutions will not help reconcile the male dominated Indian society, and instead create more divisions. Therefore, the Indian government needs to think very carefully about the fundamental problems of gender equality in their country. They need to promote women’s rights without separating men and women.
