On January 21st, 2011, Korean sailors who were kidnapped by Somali pirates were rescued in a Gulf of Aden operation. The issue of the Somali pirates has become more pressing over the past few years. Somalia has suffered from constant civil war and dictatorships of armed warlords who seized power in a coup in 1991. Although a federal government was established based on UN arbitration in 2005, the majority of the country outside the capital city still suffers from instability and violence. This state of anarchy led to the devastation of Somali’s fishing industry due to overfishing by foreign fishing boats. Accordingly, 70% of Somali citizens support the pirates as they view their actions as self-rescue measures in defending Somali territorial waters. Therefore, global action regarding the internal stability of Somalia is necessary for resolving the pirate problems.
