Andong Hahoe and Gyeongju Yangdong Folk Village have been added to the World Heritage List. The additions were decided upon at the 34th United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee meeting on August 1st. UNESCO cited the harmonious arrangement of traditional buildings, the aristocratic Confucian culture of the Joseon Dynasty which was reflected in their housing life style, and the four ceremonial rituals of coming of age, wedding, funeral, and ancestral rites on display at the folk villages as part of the reason for the citations. This registration was accomplished in spite of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS)'s recommendation against it. The Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea's quick response in preparing for the Historic Village Conservation Council, and the recognition of the fact that there is a need for these villages to represent unity in order to manage and preserve culture led to the citation. Korea now has 10 registered World Heritage sites after these additions. This is another great opportunity to introduce the Korean Confucian culture of the Joseon Dynasty to the world in addition to the previous designation of the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty.
