On August 30, 2010 the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs notified that they will produce a map of the South Pole which will be marked with place names in Korean. These place names were chosen through a naming contest. There are seventeen place names including Arirangbong, Kayabong. These names were listed on the Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica which is managed by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research in September, 2010. By producing this map, Korea has established a foothold in asserting its rights in the development of South Pole resources. It is expected that this map will generate a great deal of national interest.
