In 2023, Yeungnam University is actively engaging in global social contribution activities. YU’s social contribution group dispatched 44 volunteers to Cambodia in early January this year. The volunteers were divided into two teams and worked nine nights and 11 days each.
The first activity was a cultural exchange with students at Western University in Cambodia. YU students prepared Korean clothing styles, simple Korean greetings, an introduction to Yeungnam University, Taekwondo, and dance for the cultural exchange. WU students also played the guitar, sang, and performed traditional dances. In order to actively promote Korean culture to WU students, YU students prepared Jegichagi, Yut, and Jackstone games. At first, the WU students found it difficult to understand traditional Korean games, but as they got used to them, they gradually became amused. The most popular activity was ‘Mugunghwa Flower Bloomed.’ Because the squid game was popular in 2021, WU students understood the game best, and students enjoyed it the most.
The second activity was street cleaning. WU and YU students cleaned the streets early in the morning. One student at YU said, “It was hot weather, but I did not notice time was passing because I cleaned the street while communicating with WU students in English.” She also added that she felt proud when she saw an entire garbage bag after cleaning the street.
