Grading system Changes at YU
By Eun-Chong Lee

In the past, Yeungnam University has used both raw scores and converted, or curved, scores to determine grades. However, starting in 2012 it will change to the conversion method for all grading. Raw scores are recorded as numbers based on class averages, while converted grades are expressed in letter form. For example a raw score of 85 is counted as a B+ after being converted. In this case, an 85 carries the same value as an 89. This means that comparisons with averages from other universities that use raw scoring for grades cannot be level. By changing to this method one of the expectations is that it will reduce grade disputes at the end of marking terms. Universities which are currently using grade conversion are Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Korea University, as well as many other prominent universities. The university expects that the change in grading method will have a positive impact on YU students’ employment prospects after they graduate.
