The history of Yakjun Street and its tradition spans nearly 400 years since 1658. Yakjun Street, located in Junggu, was once one of the most prominent traditional medicine streets in the country, and it remains an invaluable cultural asset in Daegu. However, businesses related to oriental medicine are leaving Yakjun Street because store rent prices have risen on average from 600,000 won to 2,000,000 won a month since the opening of the Hyundai department store. According to the Daegu Yakryeongsi Conservation Committee, only 6 businesses related to oriental medicine had disappeared in the five years from 2005 to 2009. However, 29 are now on the brink of extinction, since the opening of the Hyundai department store. If this trend continues, Yakjun Street’s history and tradition will disappear. We are concerned about the future of Yakjun Street, and we believe Daegu should establish a conservation policy to preserve its history.
