The university had supplied smart phones to YU students at reduced prices through KT. The basic contract terms were negotiated at 30 months and 45,000 won a month. If these usage terms are met the cost for buying a smart phone will be covered by the university. However, if the students use below the standard rate they will have to pay part of the cost on their own.
The concept of a smart campus sounds like it will make all of our campus lives easier, but there are still several issues that must be taken care of in order for this to take place. For example, KT will have exclusive rights to supply smart phones on YU's campus, which means that only KT’s communication matrix will be available. Students who have contracts with other communication companies for smart phones can not receive any benefits. In addition, there is currently only one YU application for smart phones. Furthermore, the biggest obstacle is KT’s internal issues. As a result the university could not provide smart phone for students during summer vacation. The university has not been willing to give details regarding this situation which means students have no idea what is actually going on.
The smart campus concept is a great idea, and if properly executed it should be a great benefit to students. However, like any good idea, without proper planning and execution the smart campus will end up being a disappointment.
