The popularity of electric vehicles has been expanding rapidly due to environmental sensitivity. Electric vehicles(EVs) have a battery instead of a gasoline tank and an electric motor instead of an internal combustion engine. When batteries are used as power sources, they use electricity generated from power sources such as hydroelectricity, solar heat, wind power and nuclear power. Since this innovative system does not produce harmful emissions, it is attracting attention worldwide.
According to Korea’s Vehicle Management Information System(VMIS), electric cars increased by 50% in 2020 compared to 2019. Specifically, passenger cars increased 34%, vans 122%, and trucks 1,254% compared to 2019. The increase in electric vehicle registrations was possible because government has increased subsidies for electric vehicles and consumers have been concerned with the environment. In this situation, the 2021 electric vehicle subsidy has been exhausted.
The Yeungnam Observer had an interview with an electric vehicle user to look into EVs. The EV user explained the pros and cons of electric vehicles. He said, “The day-to-day running costs are significantly lower than gas-powered cars.” In addition, he said “I was pleased to receive tax benefits for helping to lessen the impact on the environment.” However, he said “Recharging an EV takes more time compared to refilling a gas-powered car.” He also said that it was hard waiting to receive the government subsidy because many people were applying. He complained that it is difficult to find a charging station because EVs have different charging cables for each type of car. Finally, he said, “If the number of charging-stations’ infrastructure is equipped enough, it will be convenient to drive EVs.”
These electric vehicles are now in the process of becoming popular. Since EVs are very attractive in terms of economics and environment, the future of EVs will be bright if they are equipped with technology and charging infrastructure.
