The Great Gatsby
“The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald is required reading for adolescents in many countries. Six films have been based on the book. I saw the movie directed by Baz Luhrmann recently. Although I hadn’t read “The Great Gatsby,” I was looking forward to watching the movie because I’m a fan of Leonardo Dicaprio who portrays the protagonist in the film.
Before I write about the movie, I’d like to jump back to the early 1920s, when the number of rich people increased rapidly in the United States after World War I. The 1920s was the peak of prosperity and pleasure and is often referred to as the Roaring Twenties. It seems that the movie director also emphasizes this atmosphere by focusing on people who have luxurious parties in magnificent estates. It was Gatsby who held the grandest parties which he did to regain his long lost love, Daisy. However, Daisy chooses money rather than love, so the glamour of his exertion ends tragically.I was most interested in the characters. Leonardo Dicaprio was convincing as a man who purely loves a woman and attempts to win her love. In addition, there is an important character named Nick Carraway played by Tobey McGuire who narrates the movie from the first person point of view. He remains with Gatsby until the end and objectively gazes at Gatsby without agitation. Other people don’t truly know Gatsby and are indifferent to him when people enjoy his parties while Nick is the only one who understands Gatsby's motivations and values his efforts.
It was questionable whether Gatsby was “Great” when I saw the movie for the first time. However, in a way his love was wonderful because of its recklessness and purity. Courage and boldness are essential to achieve one’s dream. I think you will have your own ideas about Gatsby’s love related to the era. The movie gives a strong impression to people because of his genuine love. I encourage you to watch this movie not only to get to know about the state of the period, but also the various emotions that are involved with love. You will recognize almost every human emotion like affection, pureness, obsession, anger, hopefulness, and vanity.
