YU dormitories will consider TOEIC scores as part of the application process from the second semester of 2013. The YU dormitories announced that applying TOEIC scores is in keeping with the new YU slogan (Global frontier). Students can receive a maximum of 0.3 points based on TOEIC scores. The Director of YU dormitories, professor Byeong Jun Lee said, “If students want to get a job, TOEIC scores are required in Korean society. Using TOEIC scores as part of the application process for dormitory residence is for the students. In this way, students will be motivated to study.” However, most students do not agree. They believe that dormitories exist to provide a service for students who live far from campus, and TOEIC scores should have nothing to do with the need of students to live on campus. Students have gathered 700 signatures on a petition to protest this action. The General Student’s Association also opposes this change and they will strongly demand the administration to reverse the policy.
