Yeungnam University awards many scholarships because they want to reward students who study hard and achieve good grades. When students receive scholarships, they feel successful and try even harder than before. However, YU requires a minimum TOEIC score for some scholarships. This is a problem because TOEIC scores are not part of the regular curriculum. There are some cases where students make good grades, and they are not able to receive a scholarship because their TOEIC scores are low. This is discouraging to students who study very hard to earn a scholarship, but their efforts are for nothing because they don’t have enough English skill.
Emphasizing TOEIC scores can help a student’s progress in English, but a scholarship should be awarded to students who achieve in their field of study. English is just one class. Because of this policy for certain scholarships, many students are excluded from applying for them. If YU wants to encourage students to improve their English skills through improving their TOEIC score, they should make another type of scholarship. For example, a scholarship that is directly tied to the TOEIC test can be a solution. YU really needs to consider the impact of this policy and make an effort to resolve the issue.
