Introducing Yangdong Folk Village
Yangdong Folk Village is located in Yangdong-ri, Gangdong-myeon, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. This village is representative of a folk village as it would have existed during the Joeson Dynasty period. In addition, this village depicts how one of these villages would have been organized and how it displays Confucian culture. Currently, the descendants of the family of Wolseong Son and the family of Yeogang Lee are living in the village. Yangdong Folk Village was the sixth world history village designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site on August 1st, 2010. In addition, this village has been listed as national heritage number 189, and their traditional houses are preserved in relatively natural state.

Attractions at the Yangdong Folk Village
If you go to the Yangdong Folk Village, you might fall in love with it. The village is composed of six sightseeing courses. The six courses are named: Hachon, Mulbongol, Sujoldang, Naegok, Dugok and Hyangdan. The Observer will introduce four of these courses, and Dong-gyeong-i.
The Hyangdan course is named after the structure that is built on it. The Hyangdan building has been designated as treasure number 412. This building came about when King Jungjong allowed Hoejae Lee Eun Juk to take care of his mother when he was nominated as auditor in 1543, so he built it for her. The structure is laid out horizontally, and it is made up of a main building with two separate wings. One of the wings was for the man of the house and visiting guests. The other wing was for the lady of the house. It also has a gorgeous roof structure that is visible when you first come into the village. It is based on the Pungsujiri theory of Chinese geometric principles, and it broke the mold of upper-class housing formality.
There is also the Muchumdang building which is part of the first compound of buildings found on the Mulbongol course. It was registered as treasure number 411. It was the house where Lee Bun Gong, the father of Lee Eun Juk lived as the head of the Lee family of Yeogang. It was built in 1460. The foundation is L-shaped, the main room is in the middle, smaller rooms are on the sides, and an open air patio is on the front of the left side. This layout was especially good for ancestral ceremonies and the building was used as the detached house. Moreover, the characteristics of the structure makes the building stand out.
Third, the fourth building of the Naegok course, Seobaekdang is listed as important folk material number 23. It is located in the middle of the Yangdong Folk Village. This house is for the head family of Wolseong Son clan, and it is a big building that displays formality and grandeur. It is also called Songchum, which implies 100 times the word “endurance.” There is a 600 year-old juniper in the front yard as well as that marks a shrine in the high place of the back yard.
Next is Naksundang, the fifth building of the Naegok course. It is listed as important folk material number 73, and it has a unique structure, because the large floor and the warehouse are comfortably placed together. The house name originated in the pen name of Son Jong-ro who was killed in the Manchu War of 1636. The chimney of this house is located in front of the door and not on the roof. Moreover, most Yangban, or noble houses have raised foundations, but this building's foundation is low.
In Yangdong Folk Village, the dog breed Dong-gyeong-i is so special. It has been bred in Gyeongju from the pre-Silla era and it has the longest history. Its name originated in Dong-gyeong which was Gyeongju's name during the Goryeo era. It has either a short tail or no tail. Moreover, Yangdong Folk Village has been registered as the place of origin for Dong-gyeong-i, and each home has one of these dogs.

Yangdong Folk Village is a peaceful and beautiful village that exists in harmony with its natural surroundings. However, despite raised interest after the UNESCO registration, many people still do not know about the village, and in spite of many visiting foreigners, there are no guides. In order to promote the Yangdong Folk Village, promotion is needed. Why don’t you visit the Yangdong Folk Village which is a good place for a date or a family outing and appreciate our history and tradition?
