The English Help Desk
The English Help Desk is a service that helps students with practical English needs such as correction of English writing, preparation for job-interviews, and advice on how to study English more effectively.
When students ask about ambiguous or curious points of their writing assignments, the native English teachers at the Help Desk do their best to provide the necessary corrections and give students feedback on their assignments.
Since native English teachers are always on duty during service hours, students can receive the help they need directly. Therefore students have opportunities to engage in free talk in English, and learn diverse cultural information through contact with many foreign teachers of various nationalities.
To make the best use of these opportunities, students should prepare topics to discuss. In order to make efficient use of their time at the Help Desk, students should pre-check their own work, limit their inquiries from 10 to 12 points, and keep the work they want to be checked to no more than the length of one A4 page. The Help Desk is in the Global Lounge of the Foreign Language Institute(FLI) and the service hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Every appointment is limited to 15 minutes per person.
Students who want to make use of the Help Desk should keep in mind that the Help Desk is not just for proof-reading, but for overall English skill development.
Sound-Proof Language Study Booths
Sound-proof language study booths provide a place to practice speaking and to help students who are studying languages. There are 14 booths, each with sound-proof equipment, and it is an effective place to study for TOEIC speaking and other speaking tests. In addition, students can borrow DVDs and CDs from the Digital Resources Room.
Sound-proof language study booths are located in the Language Lab on the first floor of FLI. The service hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the semester and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during vacation. Sound-proof language study booths are open to YU students at no cost, so every student at YU can make use of them as they need.
The Self Interview Room
The Self Interview Room is a facility which can help all students prepare for job interviews on their own by making use of a computer. At this facility students can observe mock job interviews which can help them with real interviews and strengthen their competitiveness.
In addition, students can choose to observe the interview procedures of specific companies and industries. Moreover, students can also select interviews in other languages such as English, Chinese, and Japanese to prepare for interviews with international companies. The questions are taken from actual interviews conducted at those companies. A camera records you as you go through your mock interview. You can have the video clip sent to you by e-mail or you can save it on a USB if you bring one.
You can apply for the use of this facility by visiting the Office of Student Development website and clicking the banner which is located at the left bottom of the screen and reserving a booth. Booths are located in Room 106 on the 1st floor of the One-Stop Service Center and the 1st floor lobby of the University Library. The Self Interview Room supports students free of charge. Each person can use the booth for 20 minutes a day from a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays except for the lunch hour from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
The Writing Consultation Room
The Writing Consultation Room is a facility that assists students with Korean writing such as letters of self-introduction, reports, and essays for contests. The Writing Consultation Room was established for students who want to improve their essay writing and need professional correction.
The Writing Consultation Room is available to all students including foreign students who can understand Korean. Corrections are provided by teachers who majored in Korean Language and Literature at YU. The purpose is not just for correction but to give practical suggestions to help students improve their writing on their own. The consultation takes place through a series of questions and answers, so if you prepare some questions beforehand, the consultation will go more smoothly. In addition, you can ask questions through a process of organizing steps which address immediate needs before the work is completed. If you require immediate consultation, you should check the teacher's schedule first.
You can make a reservation for this service on the Center for Counseling and Research of the Korean language homepage (http://ccrk.yu.ac.kr) after you download the application on the notice board of the homepage. If you cannot make a reservation through the internet, you can visit the International Center Room 303. Any work you want to have edited should be posted on the Writing Consultation Room notice board 1 or 2 days prior to your visit. Moreover, the work to be consulted should not exceed 4 pages of A4 paper so it can be checked within 30 minutes. The facility is available Tuesday and Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The Health Care Service Center
The Health Care Service Center is available to help students lead healthier lives. Students can take a body composition test for free. The test measures height, weight, balance, obesity, and body fat. This allows students to manage their health according to the results.
After the body composition test, the Health Care Service Center provides counseling for obesity according to each applicant's needs. The Obesity Clinic gives an individual consultation about your dietary habits based on the results of your body composition test and a patient diary once a week. The Health Care Service Center prescribes medication and injections to help with severe obesity at low cost. There are also massage chairs to help relieve your stress.
From March to April, the Health Care Service Center gives preventative inoculations for hepatitis A and B. These vaccinations normally cost 80,000 won, but the Health Care Service Center gives them for 38,000 won. The entry procedures for travelling abroad vary from country to country, and some countries require reports on whether you have been vaccinated or not. In June, you can receive vaccinations for Tetanus and Diphtheria (TD) for less than half the regular cost.
You can also have scaling done on your teeth after paying an additional fee of 10,000 won. The service is available from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Tuesday through Friday and reservations can be made on the Health Care Service Center homepage. You can also have cavities treated after consulting with a dentist for 20,000 to 30,000 won per cavity. The benefits that the Health Care Service Center provides are different depending on the season. These are available to students when they pay health care dues at the beginning of the semester.
School Cafeterias
During the exam period, three cafeterias on campus have events to cheer up students who study hard. Cafeterias provide snacks to students on a first-come-first-serve basis. The Student Union building cafeteria provides snacks in front of the library or the cafeteria itself. The Science Cafeteria and Humanities Cafeteria are expected to provide snacks at their respective locations. They plan to serve Monday through Wednesday in the morning and the afternoon during the exam period. They will serve drinks and chocolate or toast to replace meals. The snacks will be different depending on the situation. Before the day of the event, cafeterias will post information on the walls and bulletin boards that students will be able to see easily.
Additionally, the Student Union Cafeteria will provide snacks to 150 students on a first-come-first-serve basis on Valentine’s Day and White Day as a special event. The Student Union building cafeteria will also give 4 meal coupons valued at 2,500 won a piece to students through a lottery. The lottery will proceed when the box is full.
The Science cafeteria provides many benefits through its homepage (http://119food.kr/) which is a unique cafeteria homepage at YU. You can get information about events at the Science cafeteria homepage. Through these events, meals are provided to students for free at a discounted price. As the new semester begins, there will be new events. Check the Science cafeteria homepage. The Humanities cafeteria also provides a 10% discount for all menu items after 6 p.m., so you can enjoy your meal at a reasonable price.
The Cherry Blossom Festival
Programs during the cherry blossom festival at Yeungnam University are mostly for children, but university students can also participate in many of these programs. Even though there are no concerts or special performances, you can still enjoy the cherry blossom festival. You can make memories while enjoying the beauty of the cherry blossoms, taking pictures, and participating in programs with friends, family or your significant other. Clubs can also participate in this festival.
Events at the cherry blossom festival are mainly for children and to experience traditional culture. Events include magic balloons, face-painting, and photographs with doll masks. The festival takes place on the first Saturday of April from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Folklore Garden, and around the pond under the shade of the weeping willows near the College of Natural Resources. The schedule is subject to change depending on the weather.
The Yeungnam University Museum
Artifacts of the Shilla and Gaya Dynasties which were excavated in the Yeungnam region are exhibited at the Yeungnam University Museum. The museum has a collection of 13,745 artifacts and over 10,000 excavated relics. As soon as you walk through the entrance, you will see 6 meters of Gwanggaeto Stele.
Permanent exhibit rooms on the first floor consist of the exhibit room for archaeological material, sculptures, paintings, and folk culture. The exhibit room for archaeological material displays artifacts and changes in pottery from the Korean Paleolithic era to the Three Kingdoms Period on the Peninsula. The exhibit room for sculpture and crafts displays the development of Korean pottery. The collections mainly consist of some roof tiles from the Three Kingdoms Period, celedons of the Goryeo Dynasty, as well as porcelain and Buncheongware of the Joseon Dynasty period. The exhibit room for paintings and documents displays various kinds of practical paintings and picture writings. In addition, antique maps in the exhibit room for paintings and documents are the best of all Korean universities. The exhibit room for folk art and culture displays articles for daily use. Various kinds of wood furniture, religious artifacts, farming tools, and household items are displayed in the exhibit room for folk art and culture.
Special exhibit rooms on the second floor consist of three donation rooms, the University Archives and an exhibit room for Imdang regional artifacts. The donated exhibit room has been made to honor Changrang Jang Taek Sang, Suam Son Se Ho, Ojung Lee Jong Myon who donated artifacts to the university museum. The University Archives displays the history of YU from its establishment to the present. The exhibit room for Imdang artifacts displays artifacts recovered from the Imdang dig site. The Imdang region included the Apdok nation, and you can can get an idea of typical Apdok life in this exhibit. There is an outdoor exhibition in the front yard of the museum. Dolmen Park and the stone work exhibition are made to serve both educational purposes and to provide a rest area. The Mega-Exhibition is held about 1~2 times each year and displays various kinds of exhibitions such as ancient art, traditional art, and the minority race cultures of Japan and China. You can visit the museum from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The museum is open every day during semester, but is closed on weekends, holidays and rainy days. The hours of the museum may be changed during vacation.
You can take pictures yet flash photography is not allowed because it can damage the artifacts.
