In Korea, we have a proverb “If a woman has a grudge against somebody or something, frost falls even in May and June.” It means the fury and grief of a girl is dreadful. However, we men always forget this and keep girls down as if we want to control every single thing. Here is a woman who gave full vent to her feelings in violent outbursts. She is “Kim-Boknam” the main character in the movie, “Be-deviled.”
The story takes place on an island. To summarize it, Hyewon, who is a female banker and Boknam’s friend, goes on vacation to the island where she has stayed before. When she was a child, she and Boknam were very close, so Boknam welcomes her but the other people on the island don’t feel the same way. While she was recharging her batteries and getting rid of her stress, at one point, Boknam’s real life there comes to the attention of Hyewon. Boknam is a vicitim of domestic violence. She also works like a slave and worst of all she is being sexually abused by her brother-in-law on a regular basis. However, what is surprising is that nobody cares about her even though people know that she suffers from these things. She asks Hyewon to take her daughter off of the island but she refuses because she doesn’t want to take a risk. She becomes the weakest person there and she becomes a monster once her daughter dies due to her husband’s mistake. Finally, she wields a sickle and exposes her rage, killing everyone including her husband, mother-in-law and brother-in-law.
The genre is a thriller and a revenge drama with provocative themes such as murder, sex, and discrimination. The story shows how hard and sad the lives of “The weak” are. I thought that the movie wasn't just about the girl, “Boknam,” and not just women’s right. Truly, it spotlights people who are isolated and don’t have any basic rights. In Korea, the weak are always ignored, teased and hidden away from the public. Boknam, who bears every kind of distress, shows their real lives.
Fortunately, I started to think about parts of this movie that I hadn’t considered dealing with “Minority and Majority.” In many cases, we lose sight of trifles. Sometime we had better start to consider the sides that we don’t have time to regard carefully because we might have wronged them without even being aware of it.
