Recently many students have posted on the notice
board of YU’s homepage pointing out lapses in etiquette
by other students. Most of these posts concern failures
to observe the rules of etiquette in the library or on
school buses. Consideration for others should be basic
behavior on the part university students, and the fact
that many students are complaining about it shows that
these problems must be addressed. However, etiquette
can be considered a matter of individual judgment, so
perspectives on the problem are not always clear cut. To
improve this situation, etiquette education should be
considered.
YU currently operates the “University Life and Social
Service” program for all freshmen during the semester.
It aims to educate freshman about proper attitudes and
to provide volunteer opportunities. However, the subject
is often used as a way to simply fill up the required
service hour. Based on this reality it could be said that
there is no real university wide etiquette training.
In the case of the College of Basic Studies, they
implemented an etiquette lesson earlier this year for
freshman that took place over 8 days in Chunma Arts
Center. It is a good start to teach freshmen proper
etiquette; however, the fact of the matter is that there
are many upper classmen who have never undergone
any kind of etiquette training either, and they are just as
guilty for breaches in etiquette as the freshmen. In
order to systematically address this issue training must
be universally implemented for all YU students.
YU is blessed to have good facilities. In fact, the YU
Central library was selected as an excellent library
based on the 2010 university library evaluations.
Inconveniences are not caused by shortcomings in the
facilities; they are caused by the poor behavior of many
students who use the facilities. Too many students show
no consideration to others. Etiquette problems can be
solved through self awareness and continuous
education. A student body that is more mature and
civically aware can makes our campus lives even richer.
