The shadow of prestigeIf someone was to ask me, what is my hobby and what I usually do in my free time, I would say that apart from hanging out with my friends, I spend a lot of time reading books and watching movies. It’s a good way to forget about problems and clear your head and I especially recommend reading books and watching movies in English, because it helps improve your language skills. If a movie or book is British or American it’s far better to watch and read the original than the translation, because it’s never possible to translate everything correctly.
Since I watch so many movies (at least one per week) it’s really hard to surprise me! Actually, one of the things I judge a movie by is how surprising it is! I have this tendency to guess how the story ends during the movie and, unfortunately, I am usually right! So what is my favourite movie? That is a really tough question, because I don’t think I can choose just one out of all I’ve seen. If I had to choose, I think I would have to say the Prestige! The screenplay is actually adapted from Christopher Priest’s book “The Prestige” which I also recommend to you, especially if you want to find out more. I must say this was the most startling movie I have ever seen. I didn’t expect most things to happen, so it kept me mesmerised all the way through. It’s also a movie you can watch a few times and each time you will realise new things and never be bored with it. I don’t want to give too much away, since you would know the whole story. Generally, it is a mysterious story of two magicians and their intensive rivalry, leading to a constant battle for superiority, full of obsession, jealousy and deception, which in the end turns out to have very dangerous and lethal consequences. In this movie you will find motives of duality, obsession, sacrifice and secrecy. It is a very good mystery thriller film, played by many great actors, such as Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, and Scarlett Johansson. It is directed by Christopher Nolan, who I believe is one of the best film directors. Trust me, you will enjoy watching it!
When it comes to books, the one I enjoyed reading the most is "The Shadow of the Wind" written by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I would say a book is good if it is engrossing from the very beginning. This book is exactly like that, I was intrigued from the very first page and I couldn’t stop reading until I got to the very end. I think I beat my record for how quickly I finished a book, since I finished it the next day after I started, even though the book had almost 600 pages!
The author of “The Shadow of the Wind” is a witty, clever person and is able to raise the hairs on the back of your neck with his novel. He combined humour, horror, politics and romance and the plot itself is very surprising and hard to guess. The book is about a young boy living in Barcelona, that was taken to a Cemetery of Lost Books, where he found a book that he read in one breath, but it turned out to be the last surviving copy. From that day he tried to find more books and details about the intriguing author. It turned out to be very mysterious and unexpectedly dangerous for the boy. I won’t reveal more, because I’d like to encourage you to read it yourselves and I’m sure you’ll have the same feeling that the book ends too quickly. I’ve heard from many friends that “The Angel’s game” written by the same author is also written in a similar way and mesmerises you instantly. I have a copy lying on my desk, but I’m afraid to start reading it because I know I’ll forget about all my responsibilities and just give myself into reading it.
