Most regular major classes in the College of Business and Economics were tightly packed during the first semester enrollment period of 2011. On the other hand, private classes for honors students had many empty seats. It is a serious problem because major classes are required in order to graduate university. YNO has made several observations about the general operation of private lectures for honors students.
Honors classes were instituted for the College of Business and Economics students who are in the top 10% of their major in 2009. Around 20 private lectures were established in the first semester of 2011. These classes were given by about 20 professors who had taught regular major classes. This redistribution of teachers caused overcrowding in regular major classes. Many regular major classes contain 150 - 200 students. On the other hand, an average of 30 students attended private lectures during the first semester of 2011. Consequently, lectures provided for honors students are an inefficient allocation of space and manpower.
Honors class students are unwilling to attend private classes for two main reasons. The first reason is that some of the lectures are given in English. 7 private lectures are taught in English out of 27 lectures in all. In these cases many honors students who were expected to attend these special lectures chose to go to regular classes instead. The second reason is that there is a much higher degree of difficulty in these lectures. The private lectures have 4 or more mandatory quizzes per semester. These quizzes account for 10 to 20 percent of their total grade. Some honors students have also complained about excessive reports.
ue to a lack of research regarding student demands and the impact on the efficiency of how the major classes would be executed. Tuition payment should guarantee basic rights for students when it comes to access to major classes. Therefore, the College of Business and Economics must come up with solutions which consider all of their students’ complaints. On the other hand, students also need to change their attitude and not just seek out lectures that are convenient.
