The demonstrations in Egyptians that started on January 25th, 2011 have finally come to an end. President Mubarak tendered his resignation due to the strong protests of Egyptian citizens on February 11th. Egyptians demanded the resignation of the Mubarak regime and for democratic elections based on constitutional reforms. As the situation continued to escalate; Mubarak stated that he would complete his term that was due to end in September. After this speech the opposition of citizens became more violent. Eventually the military also began to press for Mubarak’s resignation. Finally, on the 11th, after 18 days, the president resigned bringing an end to the regime that had been in power for nearly 30 years. Now many workers have started a strike to demand pay increases. Many observers expect a certain level of confusion to come from replacing a regime that had controlled so much of everyday life in Egypt for 30 years. The international community should be concerned about the direction Egypt takes in its process of democratization.
