On Feb. 27, 2010, a powerful earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale struck Chile, killing hundreds of people. This earthquake caused more damage than the one that hit Haiti, earlier this year. There are 450 reported dead and it is estimated that it will take three years to repair the damaged infrastructure. The government estimates it will need more than $1 billion for repairs. However, most of the main harbor facilities have resumed activity and the domestic tunnel is also running again. Chile is doing its best to raise funds in order to carry out the restoration work through fund-raising campaigns as well as accepting aid from many governments and international organizations.
