Reading The Yeungnam Observer is an excellent way of honing your English-reading skills, but there is more to learning English than merely reading. To prepare yourself properly for the English-speaking world you will also need to polish your speaking, listening, and writing skills.
   These days the so called 'English-market' offers a host of different learning options which range from traveling to expensive language-schools in London or San Francisco ($5,000 per month) to logging- onto one of the new low-cost, one-on-one, Internet-tutoring services which outsource teaching to instructors based in India ($100 per month).
   Many students who want to spend time abroad in order to improve their English, but who do not want to pay for the high-end destinations such as the United Kingdom, the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, are now choosing the Philippines as a 'learning' destination.   
   Although a few language-schools in the Philippines offer instruction by native-speakers, most schools employ local Filipino-teachers who, like those in India, while being excellent teachers, sometimes have heavy local accents. Perhaps the best Philippine-option is to attend a school that is inexpensive (because it is in the Philippines) and offers native-speaker instruction.
   There is no doubt that the best way to learn English and to acquire 'authentic' language-skills is to be taught by a native-speaker. What many of you may not realize, however, is that some of the best qualified and experienced English as Second Language (ESL) teachers in Korea can be found right here at Yeungnam University.
   YU's Foreign Language Institute (FLI) is staffed by 35 native-speaker professors. Almost all of them have Master's degrees and many years of experience teaching ESL in Korea and other countries around the world. Last semester over 2,500 YU-students enrolled in FLI-language courses.
   The courses on offer are relatively inexpensive and include 1:1 (one-on-one) and small-group conversation, current issues, and writing classes. There are six different levels of conversation classes and three different levels of writing classes, to choose from, You can also choose a time which is convenient for you between 7:10 in the morning and 10 o'clock at night.
   Several native-speaker faculty members have also been professional writers and editors and the FLI offers English-proofreading services, focusing on grammar and style-correction services.
   The FLI is across from the Liberal Arts building and close to the YU-HQ. You can't miss it; the flags of many different nations are flying outside.
