Recently a series of accidents have occurred in the army. Because of them, some soldiers died. A few days ago, three soldiers lost their lives due to misfired guns. What drives them to death? Are there some ways to prevent them? Sometimes I hear from our friends that they do hazardous work without any consideration just because of their commander? order, and the job would cause some of them to be injured or killed. About a month ago, a sergeant who had just thirty days to end his military service lost his right arm while replacing the electronic line on a tower. His arm was burnt by high electricity. He was sent to the hospital immediately but there was no way to treat him except by cutting it off. This could have been prevented if there were a skilled person present.
We can find other reasons for these kinds of accidents. As you know, military service in Korea is not an option. It is men's mandatory duty. Some of them who finished their military service proudly stated that the time was beneficial for their life. However, they also agreed that the period was extremely stressful and that it was often very hard to endure. Soldiers commonly get a lot of stress in their section. Stresses are accumulated in their minds for a long time, and they affect soldiers negatively. Eventually it can erupt and lead to a terrible accident. We can all remember a tragedy involving 'a private Kim' that shocked us last year. He shot his commander and fellows to death. He stated that he had got tremendous stresses from his surroundings and his girlfriend; he broke up with her. He chose a terrible way to release his stress.
Sadly, even though accidents have occurred chronically, the military authorities just focused on covering them up. The more the authorities tried to minimize accidents, the angrier they make the victim's families. The victim? families can not expect much from the government because of the poor welfare system for the servicemen. Even though the environment in the army has been improved and the government, still the level of the environment in the army is much poorer than in any other East Asian countries. To do their work better, I'd suggest that soldiers should feel free from stresses and comfortable in their environment.
