Due to the spread of COVID-19, Yeungnam University has offered the largest number of non-face-to-face lectures and events for about two years. In 2022, preventive measures were eased, and as a result, various face-to-face events began to be held. Last March, the student council launching ceremony and club recruitment events were held. With this trend, Daedongje, one of the biggest YU festivals, was held from May 18 to 20. The Yeungnam Observer interviewed the YU student council to discuss the campus festival.
First of all, The Observer asked what the key point of  the event was. The student council replied: “Daedongje is not just a YU representative event, but a local festival with a long history in Daegu and Gyeongbuk. We have actively prepared so that students could enjoy the festival they had not experienced since 2019. Various events were held, including rock festival, EDM party, and flea markets. There were also campus cafés for each department. We did our best to help students experience enjoyable campus life.”
Second, The Observer asked about preventive measures. The student council answered: “We prepared to prevent infections during the festival since the pandemic is not over. Operators for the flea market and campus café were provided hand sanitizers and sterilizing sprays. Also, it was thoroughly managed, so that performance attendees wore their facial masks.”
Finally, The Observer asked what the most challenging part of preparing for the festival was. The student council said it was difficult to notice the rapid change in government preventive guidelines and quickly adapt. According to guideline changes, the festival size and methods had to be changed.
At the large-scale festival, YU students also expressed their pleasure. For example, Park Se-bin, a third-year student in the Department of Philosophy, expressed her emotions: “There were many canceled or limited events because of the virus. I think that Daedongje is a great chance to enjoy campus life. Also, I am a student council member of our department, so I had to prepare the campus café. Unfortunately, I entered YU after the pandemic outbreak, so I was very confused about how to organize face-to-face festivals. I think that the lack of information was the biggest obstacle preparing for the campus cafés.”
Because of the spread of COVID-19, most YU students could not enjoy campus life. There were many difficulties preparing for an event that had never been experienced. As large-scale events have returned, the campus has revived. Daedongje was an excellent opportunity for people tired of the long pandemic to be comforted. It is expected that more face-to-face events will be held, keeping the preventive measures.
