The 2022 Yeungnam University International Student Associations have been newly formed. The Chinese and Vietnamese international student associations were organized through a vote on 21 December 2021. Yang Shuo became the Chinese international student association president, and Yan Yiwei became the vice president. The Vietnamese international student association president is Cao Ngoc Quang, and the vice presidents are Bui Thi Tra Giang, Le Duy Anh, and Phan Thi My Nhung. YU recruited student leaders from China, Vietnam, and Uzbekistan. However, no Uzbeki students registered candidates, so the association could not be formed.
The Yeungnam Observer interviewed the new leaders. First, the Chinese international student association was established in 2020 to improve campus life for Chinese students. It operates with school support providing information to students through SNS frequently used by Chinese students. When asked about this year’s goal, president Yang Shuo said, “I want to create an official school SNS account that the Chinese students can actively use.” He also hopes that parents will be able to know how their children live at YU through SNS.
It has been 11 years since the Vietnamese international student association was founded. Currently, it consists of 9 members: one president, three vice-presidents, and five members (Nguyen Thi Khanh Huyen, Dnh Thi Van, Bui Thi Hoa, Nguyen Hoang Anh Vu, and To Thi Khuyen). It is divided into management, translation, and communication departments. The management department oversees general affairs. The translation department provides valuable information from YU international affairs, YU news, and programs run by Daegu. The communication department produces videos and card news to assist school and daily life. When asked about this year’s plan, president Cao Ngoc Quang answered, “One of our major goals is to help solve the difficulties of Vietnamese students’ language barrier and academic challenges in Korea.” She also said another objective is to connect YU international affairs with the international student association to create programs and find ways to manage international students well. The last objective is to actively engage in offline activities for cultural exchange when COVID-19 goes away. In closing, she expressed wishes to be one with YU.
