On February 10, The Yeungnam University announced through the Student Council its academic management method for 2022. Large-scale general lectures and special lectures with more than 80 students, based on the number of students in 2021, will hold non-face-to-face classes. Courses such as experiments, practice, and practical skills with less than 80 students, based on the number of students in 2021, will be conducted as face-to-face classes. Quarantine partitions were installed at student seats in every classroom. However, the partitions were so poorly installed that it was doubtful whether it would actually be socially distanced. Even a professor took off his mask during class, saying, “it didnʼt seem to be delivered well when I explained with the mask on.” It was ironic that the number of students in 2021 determined the 2022 academic year management method.
What measures would the school take if somebody caught COVID-19? The school organized four crisis-specific scenarios.
There is an announcement by the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters or recommendation from local governments. If confirmed university patients are around 10%, non-face-to-face classes will be conducted for two weeks. / If the professor in charge of the class is confirmed or self-quarantined, the entire course shall be organized using the previous year’s lecture or conducted in real-time. / If a student is confirmed or self-quarantined, the professor in charge of the class provides lectures or lecture materials for the previous year. When submitting evidential documents for COVID-19 confirmation, he/she shall be treated as an official attendance. / If more than 20% of the total number of the students in a class is absent as confirmed or quarantined, non-face-to-face classes will be conducted weekly. (In the event of such a situation as above, it is essential to contact students through SMS and LMS. Measures for reducing student and staff numbers in the school to a minimum were also provided but were omitted for article length.) However, there are many loopholes here, too.
Letʼs say that a student taking a new lecture that was not in the previous year is infected with COVID-19; the course professor must record a class video for one student. If the professor did not make class materials in advance, the student might study later than other students. In addition, since spring is approaching, symptoms similar to COVID-19 may appear for various reasons, such as rhinitis, flu, and body aches. However, screening clinics and public health centers are usually available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., when both professors and students have to take classes at school. Suppose a self-examination kit tests positive, and the student goes to a public health center for PCR testing immediately without going to school the next day. If the PCR test shows negative results, will the student be treated as absent or attending? Schools are making various efforts to regain their daily lives from COVID-19. However, it is necessary to check whether there are any loopholes in the efforts in various ways.
