The Yeungnam University of Kinesiology was selected for ‘The 2021 College Athletics Department Evaluation and Support Project’ by the Korea University Sports Federation (KUSF). The project’s primary objective is to improve operating conditions and strengthen the competitiveness of the college athletics department.
Kinesiology received about 150 million won for baseball, soccer, judo, ssireum, track and field, and wrestling sports clubs. Yu Shi-sup, the YU Student Support Team leader, said that it has consistently received funding since 2014. He said the budget will be used for training expenses and equipment purchases to promote player competitiveness. “Funding from the national treasury is a necessary support for continuing athletic clubs. I hope there will be consistent support and encouragement for athletic clubs in the future.”
Some contests were canceled or delayed because of COVID-19. In addition, most athletic clubs were reluctant to participate in practice matches with outside sports teams. It won’t be easy to train in the field. Despite this challenging situation, players are working hard to train.
Athletes in all six events are showing strong performance. The baseball club won second place in Group D at the U-League held from April 15 to June 5. The soccer club won a victory against Daeshin University and finished the first half leading the U-League 9 area held on June 18. The ssireum club won the championship at the 58th Presidential National Jangsa Ssireum Contest held on July 20. Last April, the wrestling club won a gold medal and two silver medals at the Asian Junior Championships. Also, the athletic club obtained three gold and two silver, two bronze medals at the 75th National Collegiate Athletics Competition.
