영남대학교 박물관은 국내의 역사·고고·예술·민속 및 인류학 분야의 자료, 특히 대구·경산 지역에서 발굴 조사되는 신라·가야 문화의 자료를 종합적으로 수집·보관·전시하여, 이에 관한 자료의 조사 연구에 기여하며, 향토문화의 전승·발전과 인류문화 발전을 도모하고자 설립되었다. 박물관은 1968년 5월 15일 개교와 더불어 개관하였으며, 대명동에서 출발한 박물관은 1972년 7월 현 경산 캠퍼스로 이전하였다. 그리고 1989년 11월 9일에는 연건평 2,224평의 현 건물이 준공되어 우리나라 대학 박물관 중 유물소장 규모나 전시 시설 면에서 최고의 수준을 갖춘 대학 박물관으로 새로운 출발을 하게 된다.
출발 이후의 박물관을 개괄적으로 살펴보면 다음과 같다.

1990년 1월 | 국내 최초로 대학 박물관 문화강좌를 개설
1995년 9월 | 박물관 대학을 박물관 문화강좌 과정으로 명칭 변경하여 박물관에서 직접 운영
1999년 11월 | 문화관광부 전국문화기반시설 관리 운영평가에서 박물관부문 장려상 수상
2000년 11월 | 문화관광부 전국문화기반시설 관리 운영평가에서 박물관부문 장려상 수상
2002년 11월 | 문화관광부 전국문화기반시설 관리 운영평가에서 박물관부문 최우수상 수상
2002년 | 대구광역시의 문화유산 해설사 위탁교육을 실시
2003년 10월 | 개관이래 관람객 백만 명을 돌파
2004년 10월 | 세계박물관 대회를 개최

The Museum which has grown apace
with the University.

Yeungnam University Museum (YUM) exists to survey, collect, and preserve archaeological and anthropological finds. It also hopes to educate its visitors and its displays are, in great part, the results of excavations and research into both the Shilla and Gaya cultures. In addition, the museum has made great efforts to secure important collections of old maps, documents, paintings, and calligraphy. It stores over 13,000 historically-important items and its collection of old maps is the richest of any Korean museum. YUM was founded in May 1968 on the Daegu Campus with collections from the Institute of Shilla-Gaya culture. The Daegu campus then re-located to Gyeongsan and the museum was set up in the Gyeongsan campus-library building in July 1972. In 1989, the museum was moved to a new 2,224 pyeong YUM-building on the Gyeongsan Campus. Thus, YUM started its life at the highest level among university museums in Korea.

The following is an overview of some important dates in YUM? history:
1990. 1 | YUM established a whole-aspect course in cultural appreciation.
1995. 9 | YUM changed its name from University Museum to Cultural Museum.
1999~2000 | YUM was honored by its selection as an "excellent institute of cultural foundation" by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
2002 | YUM gained the status of a "Museum of Excellence" from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
2002 | YUM developed consignment-education presentations on the cultural heritage of Daegu.
2003. 10 | YUM passed the "one-million-visitors" mark.
2004. 10 | YUM held a World Museum contest.
2005 | YUM presented consignment-education modules for Daegu Gyeongbuk Development Institute on the subject of foreign language and cultural foundation.
