The metaverse is coming, and it is going to be the next big platform. The name metaverse comes from Neal Stephenson’s science fiction novel Snow Crash. The word ‘Metaverse’ is a combination of ‘meta’ and ‘universe’. The term literally means ‘beyond universe’ and is typically defined as a collective virtual shared space. It combines virtual worlds, augmented reality, and the internet to create a world where physical reality is merged with the digital universe.
The metaverse is divided into four types: augmented reality(AR), virtual reality(VR), lifelogging, and mirror worlds. First, AR means modification of the real-world environment by adding visual elements, sound, or other sensory stimuli to enhance one’s experience. Second, VR refers to a computer-generated artificial environment with three-dimensional scenes and objects that appear real, making users feel immersed in their surroundings. Third, lifelogging is recording one’s daily life in a varying amount of detail with electronic devices. Fourth, mirror worlds are representations of the real world in a digital reality.
COVID-19 pushes us toward the metaverse. With everyone cooped up inside, virtual shared spaces are more important than ever. We can enjoy concerts and games in the metaverse as vividly as we do in the real world. The metaverse is developing into games using avatars, such as Fortnite, Roblox, and Zepetto. These days, the metaverse is also expanding into concerts, meetings, and marketing. BTS released a music video in Fortnite. Travis Scott had a metaverse concert in Fortnite. Soonchunhyang University had a metaverse entrance ceremony, and more companies are using virtual influencers for marketing. So, we’re already been living in the metaverse without noticing.
