“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and
rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience
and should act towards one another in a spirit of
brotherhood.”
                    - World Human Rights Ordinance Article 1

Contrary to this fundamental principle, racism continues to occur from the past to the present. With the outbreak of COVID-19, hate and discrimination against Asians is getting stronger. On March 16, there was a shooting incident in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States of America. A total of eight people were killed in the shooting, and six of them were Asian women. At the first investigation announcement, officials said that they could not identify whether the attack was racially motivated or not. Because of this initial assessment, many people became outraged. Various Asian celebrities have expressed their thoughts on the incident, and many people participated in the ‘#Stop_Asian_Hate_Crime’ challenge on SNS.
There was another crime around the same time. On March 29, a man assaulted an Asian man on the New York subway. The victim resisted, but the assailant kept hitting him, mostly on his head. Then, the assailant strangled the Asian man even after he collapsed. In the incident video posted on SNS, passengers were seen getting on and off even during the assault. Some passengers said “stop”, but no one actively stopped him. As accusations grew, the New York City Police Department set up a hate crime task force to launch an investigation.
During the pandemic period, from March 2020 to February 2021, 3,292 Asian hate crimes were reported. The number was reported by ‘Stop APPI Hate’, a reporting site founded by American Human Rights Groups. There was an average of eleven hate crimes per day in the US.
All humans are equal. No one should be discriminated against for having different skin colors. Hate crimes just rely on hate, not having reasons or grounds. It is time to think about the attitude of a global citizen. It seems that our society also needs to understand other races and overcome racism based on humanity.
