Recently, Lee Kyung-soo, a Yeungnam University medical school professor, with Jung Hae-yong, former special political advisor to Daegu, published a book titled Daegu is sick, but not crying that describes the COVID-19 pandemic situation. The title of the book is based on the title of a front-page article published by the Korea Economic Daily’s March 5, 2020. The authors said, “At that time, the Korea Economic Daily published a story about Daegu citizens struggling in a beleaguered situation, which made many people cry and impressed.”
In this book, the authors calmly recorded the moments they spent each day in prayer in the early days of the spread of COVID-19 in Daegu. It recounts a 10-day span when increasing numbers of patients who could not be hospitalized, even after being confirmed, and the urgent decision to set up ‘drive-through screening clinics, infectious disease hospitals, and life treatment centers.’ The book also tells of volunteer medical and support staff coming from all over the country to help COVID-19 patients.
The two authors said, “Through the book, I wanted to vividly express the image of Daegu fierce against COVID-19 beyond the official data record.” They expressed their praise and gratitude to the citizens of Daegu, who showed a spirit that did not run away, did not hoard necessities, and blamed no one, even at the moment of being criticized as a city of COVID-19. In addition, Professor Lee Kyung-soo said, “These valuable experiences must be established not only as the ‘Daegu Citizen Spirit’ but also the ‘Daegu Medical Spirit’ that surpasses the Hippocratic Oath and Nightingale Path.”
The 171-page book can be purchased at Yes24, Aladdin, Kyobo Bookstore, and Interpark Books.
