이 책은 국내에서 최초로 시인 이기철의 시를 영어로 번역한 대역본이다. 지금까지 시인이 출간한 열여덟 권의 시집에서 애착을 가진 54편의 작품을 직접 선정한 것을 번역하였다. 이기철은 거의 반세기에 걸쳐 詩作을 해 온 한국의 대표적 시인으로서 특유의 토속적 서정과 함께, 인간의 보편적 삶에 담긴 진리를 시로 표현하고 있다.
시에 담긴 사색과 고뇌, 연민과 애린, 자성과 희망의 언어들은 보석과 같은 것.

이기철
1943년 경남 거창 출생. 영남대 명예교수. 1972년 《현대문학》으로 등단했다. 『청산행』, 『지상에서 부르고 싶은 노래』, 『유리의 나날』, 『내가 만난 사람은 모두 아름다웠다』,『가장 따뜻한 책』, 『정오의 순례』, 『나무, 나의 모국어』, 『꽃들의 화장 시간』 『산산수수화화초초』등 총 20권의 시집을 출간했다.
김수영문학상, 시와시학상, 최계락문학상, 후광문학상 등을 수상했다.
The Profile of Kee-Chul Lee
Kee-Chul Lee was born in Geochang, Gyeongsangnam-do, Republic of Korea in 1943. He is Professor Emeritus at Yeungnam University. He made a literary debut through the Hyundae Munhak (Modern Literature) in 1972. Since then, he has published twenty volumes of poetry such as Cheonsanhaeng, Song That I Wish to Sing on Earth, Days of Glass, Those Whom I Have Met Were All Beautiful, The Warmest Book, Pilgrimage at Noon, Tree―My Mother Tongue, At the Makeup Hour of Flowers, and Sansansusuhwahwachocho (Mountains Waters Flowers Grasses), among others. He was awarded Kim Su-yeong Literary Award, Choe Gye-rak Literary Award, and Hukwang Literary Award.

Jeo-Yong Noh was born in Hamyang, Gyeongsangnam-do, Republic of Korea in 1948. He was awarded a DPhil in English literature from the University of Oxford in 1991. He retired from teaching at Yeungnam University in 2013, and served the T S Eliot Society of Korea as president from 2003 to 2005. He published Biographical Themes in T. S. Eliot’s Early Poetry, T. S. Eliot and the Criterion, and “Action Française” Condemnation and Other Essays. He also published Korean Buddhist Poems in English translation, Omeros, and Ronald Stuart Thomas: Collected Poems 1945~1990 in Korean for the first time.
책속으로
As long as my writing goes along up to the end of my life, I will never stop thinking that the journey of my career is to make poetic lyricism blossoming. Believing that lyrics should take off old clothes and put on new ones, I have composed my poems. “The new clothes of lyrics”- that is nothing but to revive a poetic dignity by imbedding a shard of truth from life into a poem, I believe, while avoiding a groundless agony, the exposure of trite sentimentalism, whining and the dismal words of love.
오래라면 오래인 나의 시의 길은 내가 생애를 다하는 날까지 지속되겠지만, 나는 내 시의 도정이 <서정을 꽃 피우는 길>이라는 생각에서 벗어난 일이 없다. 그러나 나는 나의 <서정시>가 옛날 옷을 벗고 새 옷을 갈아입어야 한다고 생각하면서 시를 써왔다. <서정시의 새 옷>, 그것은 까닭 없는 비탄, 값싼 감상(感傷)의 노출, 대상이 없는 하소연, 질 낮은 사랑의 어휘들의 남용을 금기로 하고 삶의 진실이 담긴 품격 있는 시의 위의(威儀)를 살리는 길이라 믿는다.
