Representing about 100 members of the YNO(Yeungnam Observer) graduates who worked for the YNO and its predecessor the YNC (YN Chronicle) in the university, I warm-heartedly welcome the re-foundation of the YNO.
As the YNO catchphrase says, ‘to bring the world to the campus and the campus to the world,’ academic journalism has to widen its eyes more to cover a variety of global topics, domestic issues, plus story telling on the campus.
In the early 90s, the notion of globalization was prevalent and world trade has rapidly expanded more than tenfold during the last two decades. In 2011, Korea became the world’s ninth country to join the “$1 trillion trade club.’ It marks one of the most remarkable moments for Korean economic history. It is also recognized that Korea has successfully utilized the opportunities of global ‘borderless trade,’ after joining the GATT, now WTO system.
In this regard, I hope the YNO will focus on global topics: world trade outlook and Korea’s new role in the global open market economy, ‘new normal’ era of low economic growth rate and decreasing population growth, economic nationalism and geopolitical issues confronting with the US, China, Japan.
Always remembering the late Arthur McTaggart, who served as an English adviser to the YNO and greatly contributed to its development, I sincerely look forward to seeing the next step of the YNO.
