The founding event of the International Student Association and the New Year event were held on January 19th at the Convention Hall on the third f loor of the Chunma Art Center at Yeungnam University. Sur Gil-soo, President of Yeungnam University, the team of International Student Services from Yeungnam University, and about 300 students including students from other universities participated in this event.
International students also celebrated by having Korean speaking contests and a talent show. Until now, foreign students at Yeungnam University have organized the associat ion of international students voluntarily and run it as a community of nations of sorts. The Yeungnam University International Students Association aims to help foreign students begin their life in Korea successfully and adjust well to university life. The association supports students’ study activities, academic activities, and educational activities by organizing a kind of branch for helping their academic, legal, and cultural affairs. Pan Yin-chen (30), currently in the master course of Korean linguistics at Yeungnam University’s graduate school, was appointed as the first president of the International Student Association and received an international student council flag from Yeungnam University President Sur Gil-soo. Pan Yin-chen said, “I will lead the International Student Association to help them settle and concentrate on their studies,” adding, “I will also contribute to the development of Yeungnam University as a student of it.” At the founding ceremony, President Sur Gil-soo declared that Yeungnam University is an unprecedented global exchange center for foreign students, and the educational community of foreign students will assist in their comfortable settlement and study in Korea. The International Students Association hopes to be invaluable as an essential route for mutual communication between the university and foreign students.
